CIDA Manila in the planning,
implementation, and monitoring of the
Philippines program in a cost-efficient
and effective manner.

The Department of Agriculture is the
principal agency of the Philippine
government responsible for the promotion
of agricultural development growth. In
pursuit of this, it provides the policy
framework, helps direct public
investments, and in partnership with
local government units (LGUs) provides
the support services necessary to make
agriculture and agri-based enterprises
profitable and to help spread the
benefits of development to the poor,
particularly those in rural areas.
Formulate and enforce standards pf
quality in the processing, preservation,
packaging, labeling, importation,
exportation, distribution, and
advertising of agricultural and
fisheries products;
Conduct research on product
standardization, alignment of the local
standards with the international
standards; and,
Conduct regular inspection of processing
plants, storage facilities, abattoirs,
as well as public and private markets in
order to ensure freshness, safety and
quality of products.
LGSP is a capacity development program
(2000-2006), funded by the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA),
geared towards promoting efficient,
responsible, transparent and accountable
governance in targeted regions in
Western Visayas and Mindanao. LGSP
implements initiatives and projects to
enhance capacities of local government
units and civil society organizations (CSOs)
in partnership with Local Resource
Partners (LRPs) in the areas of local
government management, service delivery,
resource generation and mobilization,
and participatory governance. In 2005,
LGSP II was granted an 18-month
extension to focus on sustaining the
gains of LGSP through a variety of
project activities, aimed towards
strengthening the enabling environment
for local governance
The Foundation for a Sustainable
Society, Inc. was the recipient of the
proceeds of a debt reduction agreement
between the Governments of the
Philippines and Switzerland in 1996. The
agreement was a result of a joint lobby
effort between Swiss and Philippine NGOs
FPE, incorporated on 15 January 1992,
aims to reverse the rapid destruction of
the Philippines' natural resources by
initiating programs and activities that
strengthen the role of NGOs, peoples'
orgranization (POs), and local
communities in the responsible
management of the ecosystem.
